N25 Bandon/Sarsfield Interchanges Upgrade

Progress Update – 1st November 2011

Demolition of Bridge

The section of the N25 South Ring Road between Bandon Road Roundabout and Sarsfield Road Roundabout was reopened to traffic at 8p.m. on Monday 31st October, 2011, almost 12 hours ahead of schedule.
Traffic had been diverted from this section of the South Ring Road over the Bank Holiday weekend to facilitate demolition of the pedestrian bridges at Sarsfield Road Roundabout and at Bandon Road Roundabout. The traffic diversion was put in place at 9p.m. on Friday 28th October, 2011 and demolition works continued on a 24 hour basis over the Bank Holiday weekend in order to ensure that the road would be reopened to traffic for commuters as quickly as possible.
The main contract for the N25 Bandon/Sarsfield Interchanges Upgrade is being carried out by SIAC Construction Ltd. The demolition works were sub-contracted to a specialist demolition firm, Loftus Civil Engineering Ltd. in partnership with Michael Harrington Plant Hire Bantry Ltd.
The initial focus was on the Bandon Road footbridge with works there getting underway at around 11p.m. on Friday 28th October, 2011.

Photograph No. 1 above shows the ongoing works on the Bandon Road Roundabout footbridge as of approximately 3a.m. on Saturday 29th October, 2011. The demolition work at Bandon Road Roundabout was substantially completed by Saturday afternoon.
Works also got underway at the Sarsfield Road Roundabout footbridge in the early hours of Saturday 29th October, 2011. Photograph No. 2 below shows the Sarsfield Road Roundabout footbridge at 8a.m. on Saturday 29th October, 2011. The demolition of the Sarsfield Road Roundabout footbridge was completed at around 3p.m. on Monday 31st October, 2011.

Footbridge Demolition

The focus then shifted to tidy up of the site and reinstatement of the traffic lights at Sarsfield Road Roundabout, including the new pedestrian phases. On completion of the traffic light works the South Ring Road and Sarsfield Road were reopened.
Cork City and County Councils would like to thank the motoring public and local business people for their cooperative approach to the works. The Local Authorities would also like to specifically thank the overwhelming majority of local residents who recognised the need for 24 hour working over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Further cooperation is requested over the coming period with motorists in particular being asked to pay particular attention to the new ground level pedestrian crossing points in the Sarsfield Road Roundabout area.
Completion of the bridge demolition works as planned over the Bank Holiday weekend marks a significant milestone in the progress of the Scheme. From a programming point of view removal of the bridges puts the Scheme firmly on track for completion by the due date of July 2013.
No significant lane restrictions are anticipated on the works over the coming days but further updates will be issued as required as the works progress.
