Coveney achieves major breakthrough in preventing privatisation of fish quotas

Simon Coveney T.D. at today’s EU Fisheries Council welcomed the Danish Presidency proposal which allows each Member State to implement its own management arrangement for fish quotas.  Ireland had strongly opposed the EU Commission proposal that would have required all Member States to privatise national fish quotas, and allow them to be traded on the open market.
 
Minister Coveney said “Since my appointment as Marine Minister, I have made the protection of Ireland’s fishing resources and fishing industry my top priority.  At every available opportunity, such as last month’s Fisheries Council; at bilateral meetings with fellow Ministers, I set down my strong opposition to this proposed privatisation of our national fish quotas.
 

HSE Public Health Doctors Urge Parents to Vaccinate Their Children Following Measles Outbreak

Public health doctors in the HSE South today (Monday 14th May 2012) are urging parents to ensure their children are protected against measles following an outbreak of the disease in West Cork.

The outbreak is predominantly affecting teenagers who are not vaccinated. In the last four weeks 25 measles cases have been reported. This compares to no cases for the first three months of 2012. The majority of notified cases have been in the 12-18 years age group with the oldest case reported being 18 years of age. No deaths have occurred and none of the teenagers were vaccinated.

“Measles can be a serious and potentially fatal illness and children who have not been vaccinated are particularly at risk of measles during this time, says Dr. Fiona Ryan, Specialist in Public Health Medicine, HSE South.

Fine Gael Cork South West TD, Noel Harrington, has called on the people of West Cork to get behind what will be the biggest tourism initiative ever held in Ireland, The Gathering 2013, the aim of which is to reach out to the 70 million strong global Irish family and encourage them to play a part in Ireland’s recovery.

“Next year will see the biggest tourism event in Irish history taking place; a yearlong event celebrating Ireland and its people, here and abroad, and the bond that unites us together. The aim of the Gathering is to reach out to the Irish diaspora and to bring 325,000 extra visitors home.
